Preparing for the ‘World Day of Prayer for Creation’ with the New Mass

Various Catholic networks will co-convene an important webinar on June 9 to support the upcoming celebrations of the ‘World Day of Prayer for Creation’ with the new Mass that Pope Leo added to the Missal. See: www.bit.ly/webinar-june-9

This online event will feature church leaders and liturgical scholars who will unpack the significance of these two gifts that the last two popes made to the universal Church.

On one hand, the ‘World Day of Prayer for Creation’ is celebrated annually on September 1st or the following weekend, inspired by an ancient Orthodox tradition commemorating God’s act of creation of the world. As Pope Francis wrote in his 2015 letter instituting the observance, the day of prayer should be “properly celebrated with the participation of the entire People of God: priests, men and women religious, and the lay faithful.” Moreover, an extended ‘Season of Creation’ (Sept 1 – Oct 4) is inspired by and flows from that special day.

On the other hand, Pope Leo enabled our liturgical celebrations of this observance by promulgating the ‘Mass for the Care of Creation’, which was recently added to the Missal – something unprecedented since 2002. For the first time, we have a Mass with a dedicated set of creation-related biblical readings (lectionary) and prayers (formulary) that make our September celebrations much more meaningful.

Ultimately, the Eucharistic celebration of this special day is an opportunity to celebrate God as Creator and appreciate the sacred gift of creation with a new lens, while inspiring us to care for it more fervently at this time of ever-growing ecological crisis.

Preparándonos para el «Día Mundial de Oración por la Creación» con la nueva misa

Varias redes católicas organizarán conjuntamente un importante webinar el 9 de junio para apoyar las próximas celebraciones del «Día Mundial de Oración por la Creación» con la nueva misa que el papa León añadió al Misal. Véase: www.bit.ly/webinar-june-9

Ante la urgencia de la crisis ecológica, que sigue agravándose, este evento virtual contará con la participación de líderes eclesiales y expertos en liturgia que analizarán el significado de la confluencia de estos dos dones que los dos últimos papas han hecho a la Iglesia universal.

Por un lado, el «Día Mundial de Oración por la Creación» se celebra anualmente el 1 de septiembre o el fin de semana siguiente, inspirado en una antigua tradición ortodoxa conmemorando la creación del mundo por parte de Dios. Como escribió el papa Francisco en su carta de 2015 instituyendo esta celebración, la jornada debe «celebrarse debidamente con la participación de todo el Pueblo de Dios: sacerdotes, religiosos y religiosas, y fieles laicos». Además, este día tan especial inspiró un «Tiempo de la Creación» prolongado (del 1 de septiembre al 4 de octubre), extendiendo la celebración.

Por otro lado, el Papa León hizo posible nuestras celebraciones litúrgicas de esta conmemoración al promulgar la «Misa por el Cuidado de la Creación»; al añadir una misa al Misal, esto no tiene precedentes desde 2002. Por primera vez tenemos una Misa con lecturas bíblicas (leccionario) y oraciones (formulario) enfocadas en la creación, enriqueciendo nuestras celebraciones de septiembre para que sean mucho más significativas.
